What is micro-needling?
Micro-needling is a treatment which uses small needles to cause multiple shallow punctures in the skin. The microscopic channels produced stimulate the body to mount a wound-healing response. As your skin repairs, the production of collagen and elastin is triggered, which rejuvenates the skin. It is a particularly effective technique for treating acne scarring, enlarged pores, sun damage and skin ageing, and can be used in association with a skin-boosting serum or platelet-rich plasma.
State-of-the-art micro-needling
To produce more effective results, micro-needling devices have evolved as new research has developed. To increase the effect of micro-needling, it is now possible to combine the treatment with electroporation. This procedure involves passing a small electrical pulse across the skin to help increase the penetration of skin-boosting serum applied to the skin during treatment
As the microchannels are created, the electroporation technology releases electro-stimulating pulses to increase the permeability of the skin cell membrane. This allows for increased absorption of serums applied to the skin leading to more hydrated, healthy skin and ensuring the treatment is as effective as possible.
Micro-needling combined with electroporation significantly increases the amount of serum delivered within the skin compared with traditional micro-needling treatments.
Lynton EPN®
Dr Edwards Aesthetics uses a Lynton EPN® micro-needling device, designed to be used only by medical professionals, and probably the most advanced device available for this treatment. The state-of-the-art, medical-grade micro-needling and electroporation technology are designed to stimulate your skin’s natural ability to repair itself. In effect, the EPN pen helps to “awaken” your skin during the wound healing process. The adjustable length, disposable straight needles penetrate at a 90-degree angle. This adjustability allows for differences in skin thickness and skin types. The vertical technology allows for extra precision.
The EPN pen does not suffer the difficulties encountered with derma-rollers: bending of needles, variable depth of penetration and an inability to effectively treat difficult-to-reach areas of the face, such as around the nose, mouth or eyes.
To ensure your comfort during the procedure, we will apply a topical numbing agent for 30 minutes before the procedure. Most patients report feeling just a slight vibration during the procedure, which takes from 15 to 25 minutes. A course of treatment will usually consist of three sessions, with a month between each session.
Immediately after the treatment, the skin will appear slightly pink to red, similar to a mild to moderate sunburn. The natural healing process takes time, so it can take up to six weeks before you see significant results.
